Screenshots come in handy to show something thatâd be harder to explain in words. You may have spotted them in tutorials, software reviews, tech support troubleshooting, or when you want to share your screen image and save snippets that you canât easily print.
Window snapping on the Mac will snap windows to any of the following targets: edges of other windows, the menu bar, the top of the Dock (if visible), and the sides of the screen. With several windows open on the Mac display, grab one and drag it against a snap target. I've discovered another utility (released via the Mac App Store just today!) that seems to provide the exact functionality as Windows Snap. It's called Moom ($5), and it adds an iOS-style popover to the green Maximize button in Mac windows. The popover has buttons that let you do the following. Main features of the software: 1. Split screen on Mac into multiple sizes and positions by 7 preset window locations 2. Draw the desired size and location for a window by grid 3. Use the keyboard shortcuts to quickly control your window positions 4. Support most apps and keep update all the time 5. Work on a great stability and performance.
While you can take a screenshot on your computer using the native screen capturing tools and keyboard shortcuts, a time comes when your requirements get more advanced. Thatâs when you turn to specialized screen capturing tools.
Most free screenshot tools are available for Windows. That's why we are going an extra mile to get a few good ones for Mac owners as well.
We have compiled the five free screenshot tools you can use to get you started.

This screenshot tool from the folks at Evernote performs screen capture and markup among other tasks, and edit the image too.
You can annotate screenshots with arrows, shapes, text, and stamps, perform basic cropping without using an external image editor, and save them in eight formats, which includes PNG, JPEG, GIF, and more.
Also included is the camera mode feature for taking selfies with your webcam, and then dress it up with a host of editing tools including call-outs, highlights, pixellation to blur personal information and more.
After that, you can share your creations via social media accounts, AirDrop, FTP, or Notes.
Skitch isn't without its drawbacks, though. From my time with this tool, I've found that I can't open more than one image at a time to annotate or edit.
For Mac, it's also not possible to save snaps to the local drive; the export command is used instead. Download Skitch
2. Monosnap
This free screen capturing program only lets you snap full screen or a selected area, and it comes with a few good enhancements. So what if may not have capture options as robust as Skitch? It's still mighty useful.

Its powerful editor lets you annotate your image using text, lines, arrows, cropping, drawings, and even redact personal or sensitive information. If you want a sneak peek of your snaps, the Preview feature lets you do that with the click of a button.
You can also rename your snaps and keep them in order before saving them as JPG or PNG files, and share them if you want on social media.
Monosnap is available for Windows and Mac, or you can download the Chrome extension and use it in your browser.

ShareX is a free screenshot tool (for Windows), but it isnât as simple as using the native options for Windows or Mac. If youâre able to work your way around its interface though, youâll find an extensive array of useful tools buried somewhere in its slightly messy interface.
Besides the different capture techniques like choosing specific regions, windows, or monitors, you can select from a variety of shapes and capture the particular area you want.
Once youâre done, you can edit using the in-house image editor. Apart from that, the editor lets you annotate, pixelate, add text, shapes, and more to your snap.
The âScrolling Captureâ option so you can screenshot a long document in any application, or capture any web address using the Webpage Capture tool.
ShareX also lets you add watermarks, blur personal or sensitive information, copy, upload, and even shorten and share the links to the images wherever you want.

Monosnap is an easy to use, and lightweight but is heavily loaded. The only drawback I found is that all screenshots uploaded to the cloud are open to the public. So itâs easy for others whom you shared links with to access your snaps with a few tweaks to the URL.

Snap is a feature that debuted in Windows 7 at its release in 2009. It allows users to drag windows to the edges of their computer screen to quickly snap them into a specific size. If you drag the window to the top, it maximizes the window. If you drag it to the left or right, it fills that half of the display. Then you can adjust them to your liking from there too.
Despite being such a popular feature for several years, OS X only recently caught on to this useful organizational tool in El Capitan. Thereâs a built-in feature that works similarly to Snap hidden at the top of every OS X window. Top mac os apps 2020. Still, the way it functions is a bit different from Windows. For more power and control over your window sizes and placement, weâll also have to turn to a third-party app.
Macâs Split View
OS X El Capitan (and presumably future versions of OS X to come) has a feature called Split View built in that mimics Snap for Windows, though it doesnât work for every application.
Split View is hidden behind the green full-screen button at the top left of every window. All you need to do is press and hold this green button. Youâll see that the current app window will automatically resize to take up the left portion on your screen.
Over on the right, an array of windows you have open that are compatible with Split View will appear so you can pick one to fill in the other side.
Tip: Not all applications will work with every Split View because some require more than half of the screen. If this is the case, windows you have open will sit as thumbnails at the bottom with the message âNot available in this Split View.â
Just click a compatible window to fill your display with two applications simultaneously. You can even drag the slider in the middle to adjust the sizes of each one.
Tip: You can also launch Split View by four-finger swiping up on your touchpad to open Mission Control. Drag one window up into the Spaces toolbar, then drag another window on top of that to merge them.
More Advanced Window Management with Magnet
If you really want to go all out with your window management on a Mac, try out Magnet. Itâs currently on sale for $0.99 in the Mac App Store so thereâs no better time to get it. Plus it does everything Windows Snap can do and more.
At its core, all Magnet really does is enable windows to intelligently resize at your comment. In addition to having them fill up half the screen like Split View already does, you can fill four corners with four different windows, have three windows with one at the top and two at the bottom, one on the left and two on the right⦠the possibilities are extensive.
When you first launch Magnet, be sure to grant permissions in System Preferences as it prompts you to do. Once thatâs complete, you have one of two options. You can drag a window to the corner or side you want, or use my own preferred method which is the menu bar icon. Magnetâs menu bar icon lists all the sizing shortcuts and even some extras like centering a window. Just click a window, click the icon and choose its position.
Split View and Magnet combined, not only can you mimic Snap, you can go above and beyond what Windows can do.
